Ingredients & Bruises

Supplements and over the counter medications that increase the risk of injection-associated bruises:

Everybody bruises and some of us are just more prone to it than others. Aside from certain medical conditions and prescription medications, age, supplements and over the counter medications can increase your chance of bruising. As a people age, they bruise more easily because the layer of fat under the skin becomes thinner and small blood vessels become more fragile.

The following list includes common supplements and over the counter medications that can increase the chance of bruising:

  •  Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA eg. Aspirin)

  •  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs eg. ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve)]

  •  Omega-3 supplements

  •  Fish oil supplements

  •  Vitamin E

  •  Alcohol

  •  Garlic

  •  Gingko

  •  Ginseng

  •  Ginger

  •  Feverfew

  •  Dong Quai

If you are taking aspirin (ASA) or the like for medical reasons, do not stop it unless on the advice of your physician. Otherwise, avoiding the products listed above for 1 week prior to your injection appointment may decrease your chances of bruising. Avoiding alcohol for 24 hours before injections is also a good idea.
