How to Prevent Acne
For many people, acne isn’t just a problem in their teen years. Acne can affect anyone regardless of age or gender. Your skin type, hormones and skin care routine can all contribute to the chances of suffering an acne outbreak.
Of all those underlying causes, there’s really only one you can control. So it makes sense to starting doing everything you can right now to prevent or reduce acne blemishes by adjusting your skincare regimen.
1. Wash Your Face Regularly
Acne can be caused when your skin oils trap dirt and dead skin cells that clog your pores. Wash your your face twice a day with a mild soap using lukewarm, not hot, water. But don’t over do it. Washing more than a couple times a day, scrubbing too hard and using a harsh soap can all make the problem worse.
2. Moisturize Your Skin
Dryness can irritate you skin, so it’s important to moisturize regularly with a ‘noncomedogenic’ (look for that word on the label) moisturizer.
3. Go Easy on the Makeup
First, you’re beautiful just the way you are! But, especially makeup that covers large areas of skin, including foundation, blush and powder, can clog pores and be difficult to wash away entirely. Definitely don’t leave your makeup on overnight.
4. Watch What You Put in Your Hair
Many hair-care products, including gels and oils, can contribute to acne when they come in contact with your skin. Try to keep your hair off your face.
5. Don’t Pop Zits
When you squeeze a pimple, it releases bacteria that can spread to other areas of your skin and cause more pimples. And if you squeeze too hard, it can result in permanent acne scars.
6. Protect Your Skin Against the Sun
Summer’s almost here and you’re probably itching to get out into some warm sunshine. But the sun’s rays can dry out ande inflame your skin. Cover up and, if you don’t, wear at least an SPF 30, broad-spectrum sunscreen. Again, look for ‘noncomedogenic’ on the label.
Nothing cleans out your pores like a good sweat.
