Winter Skincare
Just like changing your wardrobe, you may also need to change your skincare routine during the chilly winter months. Cold outdoor air combined with dry indoor heat draws water away from the skin and results in dryness.
Try these 6 tips to help your skin cope with the harsh winter:
1. Substitute your foamy cleanser for a cream cleanser. Cream cleansers are gentle and do not strip the skin of its natural oils.
2. Exfoliate regularly. Since skin turnover slows during the colder months, you may need some help to get rid of the dead skin cells more often than you would during warmer months. Try products that contain alpha hydroxy acids like lactic acid or glycolic acid.
3. Apply a serum under your moisturizer. Look for a hydrating serum that contains hyaluronic acid which draws moisture to the skin’s surface.
4. Find a richer moisturizer with a thicker consistency to provide the skin with more and longer-lasting moisture.
5. Don’t forget lip balm. Since lips don’t contain oil glands, they are more susceptible to dryness than the rest of the face. Pamper them with a rich moisturizing lip balm.
6. Sunscreen 365 days per year. Don’t be fooled by the cold - the sun is still shining with its damaging UV rays.
Everybody’s skin is different so not everyone will need to make all the changes recommended above. Listen to your skin’s needs and remember that the snow will melt and spring will bring better weather…eventually.
